Widgets vs Integrations
A widget draws something inside a block. An integration touches your data. They get confused because from the outside both look like adding something to Notion, but they work in completely different ways and carry completely different risk. The quickest tell is permissions: if a tool asked you to authorise access to pages, it is an integration.
What a widget can do
A widget is a web page in a frame. It cannot see your databases, cannot read your pages, cannot change anything. You never grant it access to your workspace because there is nothing to grant.
What an integration can do
An integration goes through Notion's API. It authenticates, gets permission to specific pages, and from then on it can read rows, write rows and sync with other apps. Zapier, Make and every connect Notion to something tool lives here.
This is why widgets are the low commitment option. Nothing to revoke later, because nothing was ever granted.
What this rules out
It also explains the things we cannot build, like a progress bar that reads your tasks or a habit tracker that remembers. Those need storage, and storage means a database. What widgets do cover is in types of Notion widgets.
Which one actually saves time
Integrations save time on data entry. Widgets save time on maintenance. If you are copying the same figure between two tools every week, that is integration work. If you are editing the same banner on eleven pages, that is widget work, and it is the more common problem for anyone who shares templates.
Neither makes you faster on its own. They remove specific repeated tasks, and the value is exactly the size of the task removed.
