What Makes a Notion Template Good

We are not going to hand you a list of ten templates to download, because those lists exist by the hundred and none of them know what you need. What is more useful is the pattern behind the ones people keep: they are smaller than expected, they use databases for anything repeating, they look finished on day one, and they keep working after the handover.

Smaller than you expect

The templates that survive contact with real life have around five pages, not fifty. Every extra page is somewhere your data can go and never come back.

Databases for anything that repeats

Tasks, clients, notes, workouts. If a template gives you a nested page per client instead of a row per client, you cannot filter it, sort it or see it as a calendar, and it stops being usable around month three.

Finished on day one

This is where widgets come in. Notion hands every maker the same typeface and the same divider, so anything built with stock blocks looks like everything else. A header in a real font, a coloured divider, a button that goes somewhere, and it reads as a product rather than a page someone shared.

Alive after the handover

Most makers miss this one. Once a template is duplicated it is out of your hands, and you cannot edit somebody else's copy. An announcement widget is the way around it: you post once, every copy shows it.

Where the good ones come from

Notion's own gallery, creator sites, and the marketplaces that grew around them. The gallery is safe and free, creator templates are usually better designed, and marketplaces sit in between on both counts.
