Notion Widgets for Students

Study setups are the single most common thing people build with widgets, so here is the honest rundown. A clock, a quote and coloured dividers cover most of what a revision page actually needs. Countdowns, progress bars and habit trackers do not have dedicated widgets here, but three of the four have workarounds that take about a minute.

What we have

A clock is where everyone starts. Use the Date and Time widget, or build your own in the text widget with (hour), (minute) and (second). Steps in how to add a clock to Notion.

A quote widget rotates a line at the top of the page. Slightly cheesy, we know, and a lot of people like opening to it anyway.

Dividers in your own colour do more for a long revision page than any decorative widget. Ornamental ones are in dividers and section breaks.

A counter if you publish your notes and want to know whether anyone reads them.

What we do not, and what to do instead

No automatic countdown to exam day, but a text widget you update in one place changes every page at once. No progress bar, though block characters in a text widget get you a good looking one quickly. A habit tracker is better as a Notion database anyway. And no pomodoro timer at all.

Recipes: countdown, progress bar, habit tracker.

Want the timer from us? Tag @theplusso on X and say so, or use Suggest a New Widget in the dashboard.

Do they help you study

The clock and the dividers help, because they make a long page usable. The rest is mostly atmosphere, and atmosphere is not nothing: a page you enjoy opening gets opened.

What does not help is spending an evening building the setup instead of studying, which is a common enough failure that it deserves saying. Set a limit before you start, four widgets, then go back to the actual work. The same applies to templates: a perfect revision system you never fill in is worse than a plain page you use.
