Dividers and Section Breaks in Notion

Notion has exactly one divider: a thin grey horizontal line with no settings behind it. The divider widget covers what that leaves out, adding colour, thickness, width, dashed and dotted styles, and the one Notion refuses outright, a vertical divider. For ornamental separators, which are drawings rather than lines, the image widget is the route.

Vertical dividers

Put your content into Notion columns and embed the divider in a narrow column between them. Drag the embed tall enough to run the full height of the block beside it. Notion columns do not stretch to match each other, so if the line comes up short, drag its bottom edge rather than padding the other column with empty lines.

Ornamental separators

Vines, flourishes, little illustrated breaks, the kind in the prettier template screenshots. No line setting reaches those because they are drawings. Make one as a transparent PNG and put it in the image widget. Same embed, same resize, no white box behind it.

Changing your mind later

Draw it once, and if you want a different one you swap the picture and every page using it follows. Nothing in Notion needs touching.

A wide ornament gets squeezed hard on a phone. Keep the drawing simple and it survives the trip.

Dividers in templates

A coloured or ornamental divider is the cheapest way to make a template look designed, which is why nearly every template that sells has one. It costs nothing to build and it is the first thing a buyer notices in a preview screenshot.

Keep it in the palette of the cover image and it does more for perceived quality than another database ever will. It travels too: the same divider link works in a Coda or Craft version of the same template.
