Make Your Own Notion Widget
Something we probably should have said earlier: the image widget is a blank widget. Upload any picture, put a destination on it, and your Notion page has a clickable graphic you designed. That covers a surprising share of what people ask us to build, and it is not a workaround so much as the way most of our users already work.
Why transparent PNGs matter
A shape with no background sits on the page like it was always there, in light mode and dark mode both, because there is no white rectangle around it. Opaque images are what make a page look like it has widgets stuck onto it.
What people make this way
An ornamental divider instead of a plain line. A button in a shape our button widget does not do. A progress bar redrawn as it moves. A badge, a stamp, a hand drawn arrow. An icon we do not carry. Of 20,800+ widgets built here, more than three in four are image widgets, which is the clearest signal we have that this is what people actually do with them.
The edit-once advantage
You edit the widget here, so swapping the picture updates every Notion page embedding it. Draw a new bar at sixty percent, upload, done. You never touch the Notion pages.
Each image takes its own link, and there is a pop up option if you would rather the destination open in a small window than a new tab.
It is not magic. Nothing made this way can read your data or update on its own, and that ceiling is in widgets vs integrations.
Why template makers reach for this first
A drawn widget is the only part of a sold template you can still change after a buyer has duplicated it. Swap the picture and every copy updates, including copies belonging to people you have never spoken to.
That is also the trap. A drawing that looks dated in a year makes a hundred templates look dated at once, so keep it simple enough to survive a rebrand. The same file works outside Notion too, in a Coda doc or a WordPress post, which matters if you sell to both audiences.
