Widgets That Look Better Than They Work

None of these are bad. They are the ones where the screenshot and the day to day drift apart a bit, usually because of load time, a mismatch of expectations, or something that looked right in light mode. Worth knowing the trade before you build a page around one, and none of it is a reason to avoid widgets generally.

Heavy animation

Animated widgets look great and cost a moment of load time. One is a nice touch. Four on the same dashboard and the page starts to feel slow to open, particularly on a phone. Numbers on that in do widgets slow Notion down.

Home screen expectations

People embed a clock or weather widget expecting it next to the real home screen widgets, and it does not go there. Embeds live inside Notion pages. Nothing wrong with the widget, just a mismatch.

Trial clocks and light backgrounds

Anything with an expiry is fine while you test and awkward when it runs out on a page you already shared. Fixed light backgrounds look right while you build and turn into a bright rectangle for dark mode visitors, which one setting fixes.

Too many at once

Less about any single widget and more about the total. Six embeds means six things loading before the page settles.

Quick check that catches nearly all of it: open the page on a phone, in dark mode, in a private window. If it holds up there it holds up anywhere.

The other direction is best Notion widgets.

Not a tool specific problem

Everything here applies whoever built the widget. An animated clock from Indify costs the same load time as one from us, and a trial widget from any provider goes blank the same way.

The one difference worth checking is what a provider does when you stop paying. Some leave the widget rendering with a badge on it, some replace it with a notice, and a few simply stop serving it. Worth reading before a page you have shared depends on the answer.
